Some dogs love riding in the car. Others do not. When your dog doesn’t like getting in the car, there are a host of associated challenges and limits placed on how you can enjoy your leisure time. No canine sidekick riding with you to the bank or fun outing to a nearby hiking trail. Trips to the vet are especially difficult–and also make the dog even less likely to want to get in the car.
This week Julie Fudge Smith and Colleen Pelar share tips for helping your dog to enjoy car rides more.

Julie’s Ginger Snaps
2 Cups sifted flour
1 Tbsp. ground ginger (or a heaping teaspoon of freshly grated ginger root. Add more or less according to your taste)
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 cup shortening (or butter)
1 cup sugar
1 egg, unbeaten
1/4 cup molasses
Combine sifted flour, ginger, baking soda, cinnamon and salt. Set aside.
Cream shortening until soft, add sugar gradually, creaming well after each addition. Beat in egg and molasses.
Add dry ingredients gradually, blending well.
Roll dough into 1 inch balls, roll in sugar (if making for the dogs, I omit rolling the balls in additional sugar)
Bake 12-15 minutes at 350 degrees.
